I also assumed the main character was male for quite a few pages, despite (looking back on it) there being no reason to do so. That was embarrassing, especially for someone like me who finds the "pink bows and pretty eyelashes" method of telling Pac-Man from Ms. Pac-Man to be a somewhat silly convention.
