There is that, but there's also at least the idea that you're already "putting your money where your mouth is" and that you might understand at least some of the process from an insider perspective. And through the magic of the internets, you might even have the author themselves drop by to debate your points... I actually had that happen to me over on my other blogspot at The Satellite Show where the co-author of the Cowboys & Aliens webcomic offered his perspective on the process and his creative decisions.

I still do have that feeling of "Am I really doing any better?" but I don't think that invalidates what you or I might have to say. After all, much of the academic and scientific communities is based on peer review of their work. Not to compare the creative community directly to that, but certainly the declaration "This is the best zombie fiction I've ever read!" carries more weight when uttered by someone who's read a hundred zombie books than someone who read two. :D

I sometimes find it harder to criticize others doing something similar than I might have as a non-comic maker. I think that when you're purely a viewer, you speak with the authority of someone who has so many options for their time, and some things measure up and some don't. As an actual creator, my views are tempered by "Well, it's not up to the standard of other stuff out there, but it's better than I can do... So I can't really criticize them..." :)
