Thought: There are places in Texas, Nebraska and North Dakota where English is still spoken with a heavy German accent. Imagine how bad things must have been in the Ol' Country to think a good alternative was to spend every last dime to settle in a vast wilderness and live in a hole dug in the earth just so you could call some land your own and keep what little food you could scratch out of it. What good are doctors, markets and (toll) roads if you can't afford to use any of them? I guess there wasn't much to lose if you were brave enough to make the calculation and the journey.
