203 – Breaking Worst

Despite the title, we haven't really ever watched too much of Breaking Bad so only know the show brought up Santa Muerte because of researching death cults in figuring out what sort of "inspirations" the Huachucas might have had. It's a real thing, and while Santa Muerte herself is not necessarily an evil figure, the actions of some of those venerating her are not for the squeamish. Given what else has been seen it's obvious the Huachucas' bizarre beliefs go above and beyond the nice skeleton lady with the scythe and globe, but since some of the early victims of the cult/gang did indeed "break bad", there you go. Stockholm Syndrome existed in the psyches of humanity long before someone ever decided to put a name to it, and has continued in our future of a Weird New West. Desperadoes and fanatics are frightening, but while SAT-TV is doing its best to present menacing stereotypes of "the other", perhaps the scariest thing is that dark side potential in us all.
