272 – Let’s Get Metaphysical

Well hey there, Iphigenia! Seems you've been keeping busy since the last time we saw you. And there's our old military gent, as well! Welcome to Episode 12, everyone! Looks like talk shows were another aspect of modern life that survived the apocalypse, for better or worse. Hopefully this discussion on the religious implications of the walking dead will stay civil -- then again, Jerry Springer and Geraldo and all their ilk never seemed to care so long as their ratings stayed high.

  1. heh, that lady is in every show, isn’t she? 😛

  2. We’ve only seen Iphigenia in one other media segment so far, but I’m sure she wouldn’t be adverse to being in as many as possible… so long as they met her standards, of course!

  3. So… is this supposed to reference some real world text or just something in the setting? Trying to get a proper feel for this scene, though I suppose being kept in the dark might be the point. XP

  4. If you’re speaking about the first panel, I advise you might think about it in terms of DotD’s famous quote “When there is no more room in hell, the dead will walk the Earth.” Which sounds Biblical but isn’t, at least not without some creative interpretation of Revelation.

  5. Actually I was speaking about the third panel, where Miss Langhorne indicates there was a misinterpretation of Scripture and many avoidable deaths as “the faithful gave themselves up to the hordes.”

Emphasis from the dialog itself (at least if I didn’t mess up the coding).

Thank you for your clarification; I guess I wouldn’t refer to such people as “the faithful”, but then again maybe that is the point. Kind of awkward to say “Some who creatively interpreted end times prophecy as well as the Biblically illiterate who still subscribed to some semblance of Christianity mistook a movie quote as indicating the zombies were a divine judgment and as such, that they should not resist.” Not only is it wordier… but… well… are nuisance lawsuits still a “thing” in this world? 😉

I would actually think the real “trap” for Bible believing Christians (plus a few other religions that would attribute the zombie plague to the supernatural) would be adherents assuming they pull a D&D cleric move and turn the zombies, have some measure of protection against them, etc. Also I am hoping “many” is an exaggeration or one of those “well, even one is too many” kind of moments. >.>

Anyway, I’ve been reading your webcomic for I think a few years now and I enjoy it. Thanks for answering some questions about the details. 🙂

  6. You’re welcome! I think it’s also important to remember that “the faithful” in this case is coming from Iphigenia’s lips, and she’s no theologian. I wouldn’t say she’s entirely brainless, either, but she is a TV personality and they can tend to be not so concerned with accuracy over style. And they like creating controversy with loaded statements 😉
