43 – Captive Audience

Dragon Con is this weekend and if you're going, be sure to stop by to check out my artwork! Maybe take pictures if you can, I'm really sad that I can't be there myself. Hopefully one day I will and then the next goal will be New York Comic Con. *sigh* This is what happens when nerds dream big. :P Also, it's a new month, so don't forget to give us a click for TopWebComics if you feel the notion!

  1. I was wondering something…

In the reality you present here do they occasionally get weirdos that actually want to be zombies?

Like the damn fools you run into in, so-called, real life that want to be vampires or something equally as stupid?

  2. I don’t think it’s the same thing, even in our world. Vampires and werewolves and such have something of a romantic or primal air to them that I feel zombies lack. For instance, even though vampires are dead, the modern day vision of them really emphasizes the “immortal beauty” aspect, as well as the “Sleep all day, party all night” vision that’s been with us at least since The Lost Boys.

Zombies? Zombie walks are really popular, and very fun to be a part of, but I don’t think I’ve ever run across people actually pining for the existence of a zombie. The hardcore zombie fans are more likely to pine for being one of the survivors in a zombie apocalypse, where they can run free, kill Zeds, and never have to worry about taxes.

That’s not saying there’s not people out there who want to be zombies… the Internet has shown us some pretty strange fetishes. If there are I’d guess it’s the sense of belonging to a group with clear goals ;), and the simplicity of having no real thoughts beyond where your next brain is coming from.

Anyhow, the zombies in this world tend to get either put down or rounded up and (eventually) processed into beauty creams, so you’d have to be a real weirdo to aspire to that. It’d be akin to wanting to be a cow on a feed lot. But I’m sure somewhere out there, someone wants to be just that.

  3. I’m trying so hard not to make a political joke here.

  4. Clint, just look up the word vore on the internet and you’d me amazed…

  5. If the internet has taught us anything, it’s that there’s a fetish for everything. But Vorarephilia isn’t about having a desire to be a zombie, but more to be eaten. And it ends there rather than having a desire to become a zombie after being eaten.

I wouldn’t doubt that there are people out there that actually want to be a zombie but the statistics for that are probably low. Hence why you play survivors most of the time rather than the zombie. If you ever are playing a zombie or watch a movie from the zombie’s perspective, it’s usually a comedy.

  6. I wasn’t trying to be a smart ass or anything, it was just one of those random notions that pops into my head when I’m reading interesting things. 😉

The vore thing was in response to Cliff mentioning cows on a feed lot, not the whole zombie apocalypse scenario.

Just ignore me, I’ll eventually go away.

  7. Aw, now, Dawn’s just sayin’. 🙂 It’s an interesting topic to bring up… I even made a new poll out of it! Sorta…

Besides, even if you were being a smart ass, if I had a low tolerance for smart asses I’d be punching myself in the face a lot. I like hearing people speculate on the comic. Sometimes it even gives me ideas…

  8. Well, to be honest I was never really into the whole zombie thing, to me it’s become cliched with nothing new being brought to the genre.

That was until I started reading this strip, instead of the whole tired “surviving the end of the world” thing we get to see someplace where the, so-called, end of the world has already happened and these are the happy-go-lucky days that follow.

It’s a fresh take on what, to me, had become a rather stale and unoriginal genre and it deserves a -lot- more attention that it’s getting..

  9. Dang, this is funny, not five minutes after I made that last post I went and found this on a pic website.

  10. OK, I suppose it counts as a fetish but there is a political party that supports undead rights. One of the manifesto commitments is to allow marriage between humans and zombies:
