101 – Panem Et Circenses

Some ask why I want to draw these types of comics. Is it for fame? Fortune? Nope. It's for the rare moments where I get to draw a butt x-ray. This is what I live for.

  1. The choice of words in the first panel are great.

Also brings about memories of airport security.

  2. Thank you! And yes, there’s some definite similarities. Except the Santone Warden’s Authority probably makes those who remember long for the tact and restraint of the TSA by comparison.

  3. Parasol Pharmaceuticals, like Umbrella Corp.

  4. Ha! I didn’t catch that reference.

As for the poll, I wouldn’t choose the Safe Zone for the safety, I’d choose it because I’m a slacker, and I assume that most things would be easier to get access to inside the Safe Zone. Then again, I also love freedom, so if the Thought Police were on my case, I’d probably go with the Wild Zones after all.

  5. There is definitely something wrong with those security guys … the X-rays would penetrate the shorts … =-o

Yeah, since this is fantasy, I chose the Wild Zones … ’cause in my head, I’m an adventurer. In reality, I’m also too lazy & would opt for the Safe Zones. Besides, there’s probably no chocolate left in the WZ’s.

Say, what happened to the awesome chapter page with the TX sized 6-shooter?

  6. And Dawn, AWESOME work on the skylines! Santone is really coming alive here. Well, except for the 2nd panel, where you did an great job creating a poisonous and dead look to the very air itself.

The X-ray is cool too. Again, great look here – you really captured the contrast and “feel” of it.

    1. Thanks BarnOwl. I really like how panel two came out with the dirty air and green gases.

And I’m happy that you could appreciate the x-ray, cause I had a lot of fun figuring out how to put that together.

  7. I have to admit I chose the word ‘security’ instead of ‘safety’ in the poll for just the reasons you outline, Gillsing. Security, after all, isn’t just a matter of armed guards and walls, it can also mean a feeling of stability and comfort. Climate control, indoor plumbing, and yes, perhaps even chocolate. 😉

Remember in The Matrix where one of the team betrays the rest? Sure he’s painted as an evil coward, but I always thought that given what the ‘real world’ was like, maybe he had a point with his desire to stay asleep and chow on filet mignon, which even though he knew was imaginary was still plenty real enough to his senses.

BarnOwl, what we’ve been doing so far is actually presenting the covers of a chapter *after* the chapter is done, but then once that week is up we move it into its proper place. So you should now find that cover at the beginning of Episode 4, and if you want to see the version with your comments it still exists in the Extras section as well as its original publish date in the Archives.

  8. That’s awesome! ‘Cause I really liked that cover. 🙂 Naw, I’m not THAT narcissistic that I need to go back and re-read my posts … however I am narcissistic enough to want to see that YOU read it. LOL

Just kidding … I really did like that cover, the work on the gun was awesome, but I also loved the work on the wood background as well as the photo. It all came together beautifully … very impressive work Dawn!
