    It’s been a while, so let me ask: Did we get a reason for him to WANT Susie dead? Not to backseat, but if we didn’t, I’m worried were about to move into “Stupid Evil” territory. Now, stupid happens, don’t get me wrong. It’s not bad storytelling for that to be the case here.

    You’ve just done a good job NOT having that be a driving factor, so the “Kill off the stars of my successful reality TV show.” seems shortsighted, otherwise. Oh, I guess I could be mistaken about the in-story reality TV show’s success. Like, if the company behind them is losing money, or they think a change in management at the ranch would make the whole thing more popular/profitable, then I can see the above scenario happening as well.

    I REALLY think I’m just forgetting something important, but that I don’t have time to deep dive to remind me of, hence the comment. >_<

      It certainly has been stretched out over quite a while, but there have definitely been hints from quite near the beginning that whoever is running the reality TV show definitely wants her dead.

      But I certainly don’t recall any reason why.

        Yeah it’s fair to not remember since it’s been a hot minute (many, many minutes) but if you feel like a refresher the most relevant bits would be the beginning of Episode 8 and the end of Episode 15. We haven’t explicitly spelled out exactly what The Exec means by his “side hustle” or who was on the other end of that phone call, though.

        I’m hoping that when the whole thing is eventually available it will make sense, or at least enough sense to have hung this narrative on.

    Seems about time for the two people who aren’t there to make a surprise entrance as the ace Susie didn’t even know she had.

    There’s still 3-5 people on her side that might be planning something. This guy is a megalomaniac with a god complex, so letting him think he’s the sharpest tool in the shed sets him up for a fall. Everything depends on those cameras, and I suspect their little stop over by the charging coffins had something to do with her actual plan, not the one the a-hole thinks it is.

    Really enjoyed the opening of Zombie Ranch. I like the combination of the western setting with the zombie concept, it gives the story a really distinctive atmosphere. I’m a freelance illustrator and animator, and I’d be interested in seeing how some of these scenes could translate into motion, especially as a short animated teaser or character scene.

Back on the horse…

By which I don’t mean heroin, thankfully. No, 2019 has begun and this past weekend was our first convention of the year at the Long Beach Comic Expo. I think I’ve mentioned before that last year was kind of rough for us, but I’m not sure I admitted that our final convention of 2018 was the first time I can remember my mindset going in felt like, “Let’s just get this over with.” I felt exhausted. We made it through, and there were bright spots, but all in all I worried the spark had finally gone out, maybe for good.

I figure all creators go through cycles like this sooner or later, and if we don’t appear to it’s just because we’re better at hiding it. It wasn’t the first time, but that particular time was at the end of a long slump and both Dawn and I were feeling it simultaneously, whereas at other times we’d have the luxury of leaning on each other.

Okay, anyhow, enough of that! The good news. We got through that show, chugged ourselves along through the end of that year and the beginning of this one, and I’m finally looking forwards to the rest of 2019. It’s not that the Expo went super amazingly well, but it was at least a reminder of all the positive things and, perhaps more importantly, felt like it. People smiled and I smiled back, and sometimes they bought things but if they didn’t they were at least having a good time and I was having a good time.

It’s always a hesitation for me to admit to any bad times because I figure you folks come around here for escape from your own troubles. Also I don’t want to seem like some gratification junkie that needs constant kind words… I feel like we do get plenty of those — in fact I think another hesitation creators have in admitting any sad times is being anxious your fans will feel like their expressed support is so much chopped liver. Nothing could be further from the truth, so I hope none of you who have supported us these past several months will believe that. It does matter, even if sometimes it’s not so much instant succor as just keeping us afloat until we swim.

2019 is our tenth anniversary of the Ranch, so… I’m glad to feel like swimming again.
